Primary school

At Zahira College, the Primary students are given an exceptional foundation in all the fundamental skills and their natural curiosity is stimulated. Young children are dynamic learners and thus function most effectually through first-hand experiences. They are encouraged to question, discover, apply and examine what they know and to develop their ideas and imagination. During these five years of Primary Education, from Grade 1 to Grade 5, the students are fortified to improve their language, namely English, Sinhala and Tamil as they start to assimilate information and skills that they will shape on throughout their lives.

Our teachers, who are highly qualified child experts, devote themselves to identifying and tapping the gifts and talents of each young Zahirian, encouraging them to rise to their full potential and propagating in them the determination and perseverance to do so. Leadership potentials are often marked and supported even at this very young age often electing Monitors for every classroom and electing Primary Prefects at Grade 5, preparing them to step into the boots of their seniors with a taste of responsibility. They are also prepared to sit for the Prestigious Grade 5 Scholarship Exam.

These young Zahirians are introduced very early to creative expression and independent thinking is highlighted through a balanced academic and extracurricular activities. Socially preferred behaviour patterns are instructed through a focus on etiquette and values which will lay the foundation for students’ social interface and progress. They are also encouraged to work together in teams and groups with weekly group Art and Craft periods. Academic and non-academic quests begin to complement each other very markedly and Zahira’s philosophy remains dedicated to nurturing and valuing each student’s talents.
