The Prize Day Report was read by the Principal Mohamed Jiffry.

He has been recognised and awarded the CIMA INSTITUTE PLAQUE, CIMA CITATION and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries UK CITATION. He was awarded CIMA Business Leader Award in the year 2003,Entrepreneur of the year 1994-Second Place in the Western Province by the FCCISL and was given the 2008 Tourism Legend Award by the President of Sri Lanka. In addition to his business interests, Prof. Furkhan has maintained regular long standing interest in the academe.

While being a regular Lecturer in Accountancy And Management subjects, he has held the position of Principal of Zahira College, Colombo and Professor of Management Accounting of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka. Prof. Furkhan has held office in various professional bodies, Government Institutions, State Corporations and Private Sector Business Associations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry and as President of the Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka.

Prof. Furkhan has been a member of the independent National Police Commission of Sri Lanka and the Finance Commission of Sri Lanka. He was a member of the Council of the Postgraduate Institute of Management and the Council of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

In recognition of the Services rendered to education and generally to the country the President of Sri Lanka awarded him the title of Deshabandu in 1987 and was later conferred the title of Desamany in 2005.

He then proceeded to the United Kingdom to do his post graduate studies in computer science. After getting qualified in computer science he worked in UK. From there he was working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the ministry of planning.

He also worked in Vienna, Australia at the United Nations office for 20 years as an computer expert.

After 35 years of service in overseas he has returned to Sri Lanka to serve his Alma Mater and the country. Presently he is an active member of Group of 60.

We lost with 4 to 1. Nevertheless it was a fabulous experience to play against an international team.

It said that the institute would serve as a educational hub for the region in catering to national needs while reaching out to countries in the region to support their teacher networks and strengthen their professional capacity.

Assistant Director General of UNESCO, Dr. Qian Tang, held talks with the Minister of Education and Sri Lankan Representative  on the UNESCO Executive Board, Bandula Gunawardena at its headquarters in  Paris  on Thursday (12).

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Paris, in a statement released yesterday, said that UNESCO welcomed the proposal and noted that it was an important step towards further collaboration in the field of education. Dr. Qian Tang also stated that Sri Lanka was the only country with a national action plan for education, peace and sustainable development.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that he welcomed  UNESCO’s support towards Sri Lanka in their efforts to provide teachers a proper understanding of English, Information Technology, Mathematics and Science and said that he hoped the proposed institute would pave the way for  professional development and enhancing the quality of teacher education in Sri Lanka.

The distribution of scholarships took place charmingly at Zahira College Principals’ Office on Friday, 13th May 2011. The package included 2 sets of school uniforms, arrears of facility fees up to April 2011, advance payment of facility fees up to December 2011 and tuition class fee for next 3 months and further will be added accordingly.

We wish to thank OBA Qatar members for coming forward and joining hands together with PPA to make this excellent example of recognizing poor but bright Zahirians.
